Today marks day one of Women’s Self-Empowerment Week 2010. When I first researched this “celebration”, I found the woman who originated this annual observance. However, I didn’t note her website and I can’t seem to find it again.
Regardless of who started it and the reasons why, I felt it important to celebrate in my own way, with you all, here on Mompowerment.
I had grandiose ideas, like putting a local women’s self-empowerment group together or hosting a daily morning empowerment call, but none of those ideas worked out.
Then I got to thinking about self-empowerment and what it means to me.
I’m not a feminist, so I don’t want to start a “rah-rah women rock!” event (even though we do
). I also don’t want to “just” post a daily empowering quote — it seems too… easy. Finally, while I’d love to make a great big huge production out of Women’s Self-Empowerment Week, I just don’t have it in me to pull off such an event this year.
To me, self-empowerment means consistently taking small steps to improving my life and making myself better. So that got me thinking… How can I improve my life or make myself better this week? The answer was so obvious, it hit me like a ton of bricks!
If I want to empower myself, to be better in my life — for my kids, my husband, my extended family, my friends and my business — I need to get more sleep…
Simple, huh?
But for me, it’s a big one. I’m up all day entertaining 3 kidlets who are constantly vying for my attention, keeping our home in order, preparing meals, and trying to steal “quiet” moments to get some writing done. I put the baby in bed at 7:00 PM and hubby takes over from then on. Then I’m in my office until 1:00 or 2:00 AM, however most of that time seems unproductive, because my brain is just out of it.
So…
… here’s how I will celebrate Women’s Self-Empowerment Week 2010:
- I’m taking the “Do One Thing Different
” approach to being more productive (this is an ongoing issue for me). Instead of staying up until 1:00 or 2:00 AM working, then waking up groggy and cranky each morning, I’ll go to bed no later than 10:00 PM and wake up at 4:00 AM to get some work done.
I’ve heard that waking up earlier makes you more productive. I’m not a morning person, but I guess now’s a good time as any to test the theory out. I’ve also heard that the body restores itself best during sleep between 10:00 PM and 12:00 AM.
I already foresee challenges (like my 9:00 PM client call tonight!), but I am determined to make this work!
It is well to be up before daybreak, for such habits contribute to health, wealth, and wisdom. – Aristotle
We’ll see about that!!
What about you? How will you celebrate Women’s Self-Empowerment Week? I invite you to join me in doing one thing different as well.
How do you choose what to do differently?
- Think about a problem or challenge you currently face in your life (personal or business).
- Take responsibility for your part in the problem.
- From now on, talk about your problem or challenge in the past, for example “In the past, I had a tendency to…“
- Think of one small thing you can do this week to fix, minimize, reduce or eliminate the problem or challenge in your life.
- Do that one small thing each day this week.
- Journal about your experience at the end of each day.
Who’s with me?
Keep us posted on your progress and let me know how I can support you!
