Happy Women’s Self-Empowerment Week 2010

by Cristina Favreau on January 4, 2010

Today marks day one of Women’s Self-Empowerment Week 2010. When I first researched this “celebration”, I found the woman who originated this annual observance. However, I didn’t note her website and I can’t seem to find it again.

Regardless of who started it and the reasons why, I felt it important to celebrate in my own way, with you all, here on Mompowerment.

I had grandiose ideas, like putting a local women’s self-empowerment group together or hosting a daily morning empowerment call, but none of those ideas worked out.

Then I got to thinking about self-empowerment and what it means to me.

I’m not a feminist, so I don’t want to start a “rah-rah women rock!” event (even though we do ;) ). I also don’t want to “just” post a daily empowering quote — it seems too… easy. Finally, while I’d love to make a great big huge production out of Women’s Self-Empowerment Week, I just don’t have it in me to pull off such an event this year.

To me, self-empowerment means consistently taking small steps to improving my life and making myself better. So that got me thinking… How can I improve my life or make myself better this week? The answer was so obvious, it hit me like a ton of bricks!

If I want to empower myself, to be better in my life — for my kids, my husband, my extended family, my friends and my business — I need to get more sleep

Simple, huh?

But for me, it’s a big one. I’m up all day entertaining 3 kidlets who are constantly vying for my attention, keeping our home in order, preparing meals, and trying to steal “quiet” moments to get some writing done. I put the baby in bed at 7:00 PM and hubby takes over from then on. Then I’m in my office until 1:00 or 2:00 AM, however most of that time seems unproductive, because my brain is just out of it.

So…

… here’s how I will celebrate Women’s Self-Empowerment Week 2010:

  • I’m taking the “Do One Thing Different” approach to being more productive (this is an ongoing issue for me). Instead of staying up until 1:00 or 2:00 AM working, then waking up groggy and cranky each morning, I’ll go to bed no later than 10:00 PM and wake up at 4:00 AM to get some work done.

I’ve heard that waking up earlier makes you more productive. I’m not a morning person, but I guess now’s a good time as any to test the theory out. I’ve also heard that the body restores itself best during sleep between 10:00 PM and 12:00 AM.

I already foresee challenges (like my 9:00 PM client call tonight!), but I am determined to make this work!

It is well to be up before daybreak, for such habits contribute to health, wealth, and wisdom. – Aristotle

We’ll see about that!!

What about you? How will you celebrate Women’s Self-Empowerment Week? I invite you to join me in doing one thing different as well.

How do you choose what to do differently?

  1. Think about a problem or challenge you currently face in your life (personal or business).
  2. Take responsibility for your part in the problem.
  3. From now on, talk about your problem or challenge in the past, for example “In the past, I had a tendency to…
  4. Think of one small thing you can do this week to fix, minimize, reduce or eliminate the problem or challenge in your life.
  5. Do that one small thing each day this week.
  6. Journal about your experience at the end of each day.

Who’s with me?

Keep us posted on your progress and let me know how I can support you!

by Cristina Favreau on December 21, 2009

“Do not read this book in public. Your guffaws will prompt the stares of strangers. Your tears will streak your mascara in a most uncomely manner. Elizabeth is that kind of writer: funny and self-deprecating, keen-eyed and sincere. Which is why, among the 600 writers we considered for our blog, she was an immediate, irresistible standout.” Lilan Patri, Deputy Editor, parenting.com “The word ‘barf’ appears 28 times in this book. What’s With Doctors OK’ing Alcohol During Pregnancy?

by Cristina Favreau December 19, 2009 Diet

I just watched a video on YouTube that really got my blood boiling. Here’s my video rant about it (for those who hate video, the text version is below): The video was of a doctor –a director of obstetrics and author of 2 books on pregnancy, no less–  in an interview about what foods to [...]

What’s In Store?

by Cristina Favreau December 3, 2009 Uncategorized

I’m dealing with major PC issues and I’m not sure when I’ll be able to scape an extra thousand dollars together for a laptop. Until then, updates will be a little erratic. I was able to steal a few minutes on my hubby’s laptop (which he doesn’t even want me looking at, for fear I’ll [...]

62 Days of Raw: Day 13 – Cruisin’

by Cristina Favreau November 27, 2009 62 Days of Raw

OK, so I’ve neglected raw food updates all week, so I’ll get right to it. Ah, day 13! The almost 2-week mark. Last Saturday, we drove to the in-laws to pick up our 2 older kids. I didn’t want to take any chances, so I planned to make a Mediterranean salad for my supper. When [...]

So it’s been a week since I last posted on my 62 Days of Raw adventure. Shameful, I know… Wait until I tell you why — which has nothing to do with my raw food diet (I don’t think). Last week, hubby and I decided we should get a puzzle, something we can do together [...]

62 Days of Raw: Day 6 – Sleep, Sweet Sleep

by Cristina Favreau November 20, 2009 62 Days of Raw

Here’s what happened when I went raw this summer: My body would tell me it was ready for bed at around 10pm > I’d fall asleep soon after hitting the pillow > I’d have deep and uninterrupted sleep throughout the night > I would wake up early (early for me) refreshed and ready to go. [...]

62 Days of Raw: Day 5 – RAWk-On!

by Cristina Favreau November 19, 2009 62 Days of Raw

The energy levels I’m experiencing today are insane!! I forgot how quickly energy kicks in on a high raw diet  (which is lingo meaning I’m eating ONLY raw vegan foods). Today I actually added the exercise piece to the whole losing weight puzzle. I went out for a vigorous walk in the woods. Jazzy was [...]
